The Righting Wrongs Seminar at the Freehills Lecture Theatre at Murdoch University was an interesting and informative day.
Mr McCusker AO QC the Innocence Project WA patron introduced the day while discussing the need for mandatory compensation for those who have been wrongfully convicted.
Wendy Page from Australian Story then discussed the medias' involvement in wrongful
convictions ,who can contribute to wrongful convictions but who can also be crucial in rectifying
or overcoming them.
Robin Napper who is an ex police officer from the UK then addressed the audience about some of
the current issues with police investigation techniques and how these techniques can have
devistating effects for those wrongfull accused of crimes.
Rupert Johnson from the Sellenger Innocence Project then gave everyone a run down on the
workings of the Sellenger Innocence Project and some of the progressions and benifets of the
project.
Finally the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG address a captivated audience about his
thoughts on miscarriages of justice and some potential remidies.
Thanks to all our guest speakers including our patron Mr Malcolm McCusker AO QC, to Mirella
Scaramella (the event MC), Michael Muntz (for recording the event) and to Matthew Gugiatti who
is a Murdoch law student who volunteered his time and showed some exceptional efforts to
ensure the event proceeded.
